A group of researchers from France at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology discovered that, in addition to the findings that resveratrol inhibits obesity and increases the life span of mice, it also seems to have a profound impact on endurance and overall energy levels as well!.In their research, Dr Auwerx observed that mice given a resveratrol dose were able to run twice as far as the mice in the control group that were not supplemented with the resveratrol extract. The resveratrol infused mice also had more energy charged muscles and a lower heart rate – mimicking the health states of top trained athletes! Dr. Auwerx attributed these results mostly to the noticeable increase in the number of mitochondria they discovered in the muscle cells of resveratrol supplemented mice.
Mitochondria is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in most eukaryotic cells and is responsible for generating energy within the body With more mitochondria, the supplemented mice were capable of burning additional fat and therefore inhibit weight gain and lowered insulin sensitivity, Dr. Auwerx said. The research team ascertained that the rodent’s muscle fibers had been restructured by the resveratrol treatment into the form more likely to exist in trained human athletes.The resveratrol-treated mice also exhibited improved insulin sensitivity and an increased metabolic rate. Notably, mice treated with resveratrol showed a 100% increase in exercise endurance.
The mice treated with resveratrol had greater muscle control and strength, and their heart rate when at rest was significantly lower than untreated mice.
Upon further investigation of these results, the scientists studied mitochondria levels, which we previously mentioned are the main generators of power in the body that exist in every cell. In order to improve power and energy levels, the doctors realized that resveratrol must have been affecting the levels of mitochondria in the mice. When the treated mice were examined, they were found to have higher amounts of mitochondria than the untreated mice, resulting in their ability to run for longer periods of time and burn extra fat.
Studies concluded that these profound results were due to the measurable increase in the number of mitochondria in the muscle cells of the Resveratrol enhanced mice.
